Pro bono attorneys are an integral part of how Partners helps secure justice for all in NJ. With only so many hours in a day for our staff attorneys, our pro bonos can help provide a safe and secure process for our clients. At the same time, these pro bono attorneys get the satisfaction of helping a community in need as well as trial experience they may not have an opportunity for in their full time positions.

One of our amazing pro bono attorneys sat down to answer some questions about herself, her legal experiences with Partners, and some fun facts about herself.

Q: Can you introduce yourself for everyone?
A: Hello, my name is Liz Presnell.

Q: What firm are you with and what is your title?
A: Lawyer, Food Industry Counsel LLC.

Q: Why did you start your legal journey?
A: During my career in food safety, I continued to be exposed to regulatory and legal issues. As I got more and more involved, I realized law school, and learning more about the law, would be a good path for me.

Q: How did you become involved with Partners?
A: I was looking for an organization that offered pro bono opportunities, and provided training and guidance throughout the pro bono experience. Because my day-to-day legal practice does not easily transfer to areas where attorneys typically provide pro bono counsel, having the training and guidance Partners offers was incredibly helpful.

Q: How many cases have you taken for Partners?
A: Just one so far!

Q: Describe your experience handling a specific case (beginning to end).
A: From the very beginning, when I was first contacted by Victoria, the entire process was thoroughly explained and I was guided through each step. Initially, the next hearing in the case was about a week after I got involved – so the entire Partners team was exceptional in ensuring that both I and the client were prepared and ready for the hearing. Though we had several delays throughout the process, Partners continued to provide expert support and direction. During the process, my primary point of contact at Partners changed to Lisa, who was exceptionally available, supportive, and helpful as the client and I prepared for each hearing. In the end, we succeeded in obtaining a Final Restraining Order for the client, who wanted the accountability an FRO provides.

Q: What is your everyday practice like?
A: What areas do you practice in? My practice is  limited to counseling companies that operate within the food industry, on everything from routine regulatory compliance to less routine activities like product recalls. Because the food industry is always changing, my day-to-day similarly adjusts based on current needs.

Q: How is your practice similar or different from the work you do for Partners?
A: My practice is completely different from the case I’ve worked on with Partners. I don’t currently engage in trial work in my day-to-day, and typically, my work is limited to specific issues or concerns. The work I did with Partners, on the other hand, allowed me to, first, develop trial skills which I wouldn’t otherwise utilize, and, second, provide tangible support to an individual, while my practice is exclusively counseling corporate clients.

Q: What motivates you to take on cases for our clients?
A: Partners provides such critical support to individuals, during a difficult and confusing time. Being able to help provide that guidance and support, even if only for one client, is an incredible experience.

Q: What is your favorite book/movie/television series?
A: My current favorite book series is the Finlay Donovan series by Elle Cosimano, but that changes regularly based on what I’ve recently read. Currently, most of my television watching is of my favorite baseball team, the Mets.

Q: What has been your favorite vacation you’ve been on?
A: This is a toss-up between a trip to Lisbon, Portugal, and my honeymoon, where we visited several different regions of France. Between the food, wine, and culture, I would happily move to either country!
