As Domestic Violence Awareness Month wrapped up, Spooky Strides for Strength marked its first annual event with a powerful show of support for domestic violence and sexual abuse survivors. Hosted by six leading New Jersey organizations including Partners, The Safe House, Essex County Family Justice Center, Family Service League, YWCA Union County, and Passaic County Domestic and Sexual Violence Center, the 5K run and walk event drew over 200 participants to South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ, on October 27. This vibrant gathering was a blend of community resilience, solidarity, and festive fun—all for an essential cause.
Starting off in the cool, crisp morning, runners took on the 5K route around the scenic lake at Clipper Pavilion, a perfect setting for a community united in advocacy. Alongside seasoned runners were supporters new to the mission, showcasing the powerful reach of this initiative to bring allies together. After the race, it was the kids’ moment to shine in the Scary Scurry Kids Run, which saw young participants dashing with energy and purpose. Following the kids’ event, walkers gathered for a loop around the lake, closing out the athletic portion of the day.

The event had a lively atmosphere, packed with family-friendly activities and special moments. Thanks to Planet Fitness of Newark, everyone stayed limber with warm-up sessions, and motivational speeches from Kathryn Lynch of YWCA and Leslie K. Brown of Partners inspired the crowd. The costume contest, featuring awards for best kid, pet, and group costumes, brought extra excitement, while a face painter and balloon artist delighted children and adults alike.
With an impressive turnout of participants, donors, and volunteers, Spooky Strides for Strength successfully raised funds for each of the six host organizations, contributing to their crucial work in supporting survivors and combating domestic violence across New Jersey.
